We recently had the exciting opportunity of attending the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, the leading international trade show for all those working in children’s content and publishing. Running from the 4th-7th April, the exhibition showcased over 1,200 exhibitors, bringing together professionals – authors, illustrators and editors, to booksellers and distributors – from across the globe.
In its 53rd year the Bologna Children’s Book Fair succeeded in connecting businesses and those at the forefront of publishing for children and young adults, helping to drive new developments in the market and improve the production process. The event gave us real insight into the latest news, innovations and emerging trends in the children’s publishing industry.
We also found it very valuable to be able to meet with other industry professionals and find out more about the vast range of media being produced by publishers large and small. As a global distributor and logistics provider for varied publishers and printers, we were able to learn about where the industry is going and gain an up-close understanding of the whole cycle of book production and publisher’s needs.
A highlight of the fair was the Illustrators Exhibition, celebrating its 50th year. The event is held annually to display the talent of children’s illustrators, judged by experts in the field. This year we saw 50 illustrators exhibit their prize-winning books, works that have inspired entire young generations. The creative works show how important the finest details contribute to a book’s success; everything, from the print and graphics, to the packaging, needs to work cohesively to deliver the author’s aims for their story and the needs of the market.
